Tape Hiss revels in sonic limitations on new album ‘A Linear Progression’
The NYC producer adopts a less-is-more approach on his Darker Than Wax debut
Tape Hiss makes his debut on Singapore’s Darker Than Wax with his new album, ‘A Linear Progression’.
The NYC-based producer has made waves with previous releases on Love Notes from Brooklyn, Axe on Wax, Just Jack, and Lost Palms among others. Known for a melodically-rich and complex sound signature that’s rooted in hardware studio refinement, his latest work veers into new sonic territory thanks to a stripped-back production approach. ‘A Linear Progression’ was recorded in the throes of the pandemic, with each track composed or sketched on an Akai MPC 1000 during out-of-town road trips to visit family. Armed with the bare bones of an album, Tape Hiss eventually returned to the studio to finish off the collection, adopting a ‘90s-themed, sample-based approach throughout. The results are nothing short of stunning, and — despite the self-imposed compositional restrictions — the collection is thick with engaging refrains and feels entirely complete.
From the infectious chords of the title track to the effervescent rhythms of the closing track, ‘Heartbreaking’, the coherent LP stands up proudly to the artist’s impressive back-catalogue. Highlights include the meditative waves and spirited groove of ‘Energy Transfer’ and the raw drums and wondering synths of ‘Code 6’. Lush and evocative, this imaginatively formed collection marks an inspired piece of curation from the Darker Than Wax crew, adding to an already impressive and ever-evolving release inventory for the Singapore label.
