Sun Down Circle brings Brazil, Japan & Indonesia together at Potato Head Bali

Potato Head Bali's Sun Down Circle is back on Friday, August 21, framed as an Archipelago Sound Exchange between Brazil, Japan and Indonesia.

The every-second-month gathering usually draws on a mix of touring and local names, but this edition specifically pairs artists from the three archipelagos across the day's programming, from the opening listening session through to the closing DJ sets.

The Summer Season edition kicks off at 2PM and moves across the Beach Club and Klymax Discotheque.

Things start at Klymax with Chee Shimizu, the Tokyo-based DJ and founder of Organic Music, who leads a listening and storytelling session through the venue's quad stack soundsystem, working through vintage disco, Balearic and dubby selections.

Once the sun starts dropping, the action shifts to the Beach Club for a run of live sets.

Azymuth, the Brazilian jazz-funk group now five decades deep into their career, take the stage with MPB vocalist Sabrina Malheiros, bringing samba and bossa nova along with them.

Indonesian pianist Indra Lesmana follows with his own take on jazz rooted in the archipelago, and Sapporo producer Kuniyuki plays a live set that moves through ambient, house and jazz.

Then Moodymann steps in. Real name Kenny Dixon Jr., he’s been shaping Detroit house since the early '90s, running his own label KDJ Records and pulling jazz, funk, blues and rock into his sound along the way. His live sets have a reputation for being loose and hard to predict. Brazilian-born, Indonesia-based selector Luma closes out the golden hour alongside the Detroit producer.

From there, the night heads back into Klymax Discotheque for a Rainbow Disco Club session.

Japanese duo Monkey Timers, who've been building a name for their slow-burning house and disco dub sets, play alongside Potato Head residents Dita and Gero, taking things through Balearic, breaks and deep house until late.

Beyond the music, expect a Potato Head pop-up, merch on hand, and a full day of programming on Headstream Radio.
