Hong Kong venue SLAP 拍 announces closure later this month

Hong Kong venue SLAP 拍 has announced they’re closing their doors later this month.

The news comes in a heartfelt post, stating the reasoning behind the closure, including operational obstacles, struggles with opening a cafe in the same space and financial struggles.

The Mong Kok venue, which had a strong emphasis on grassroots and community-led initiatives, opened only last December, but quickly left a strong mark on Hong Kong’s underground.

Back in June, Mixmag Asia collaborated with SLAP 拍 on CIRCUITS with Kiss Nuka and FUKHED.

This news comes just days after Bangkok venues BEAM and BEAMCUBE also announced their closures and final programming.

Speaking on the closure, Paul Henderson and Tracy Pang, the team at SLAP 拍, told Mixmag Asia: “We're truly grateful to people who supported us along the way; the depth of talented artists in Hong Kong, the producers, designers, bartenders, dancers, and of course, all our friends and guests.”

They continue: “SLAP 拍 has always been shaped by those in the community that share our passion. Since the very beginning, its been built personally little by little throughout. The music, the art installations, the laughter, the dances, the workshops, the sweat and tears... these are the shared memories we'll never forget.”

“Although SLAP 拍 will end in its current physical form, we'd like to continue challenging Hong Kong’s nightlife paradigm with events focused on local talent when suitable opportunities arise. We can’t wait,” they conclude.
