Disco maestros Romain FX & Midnight Runners unite for Hong Kong debut

A new temporary space in the heart of Hong Kong’s Central district will be reformed into a pop-up club to showcase homegrown disco aficionado Romain FX and Indonesia’s cherished music digger and archivist, Harry 'Munir' Septiandry aka Midnight Runners.

After departing Hong Kong and making Europe his new turf, Romain FX now returns to the region for his third Asia Tour; and this time Mixmag Asia and Salon 10 jumped at the opportunity to pair the dynamic Frenchman with an artist of a similar aesthetic and vibrancy — homegrown Indonesian music maestro, Munir aka Midnight Runners.

As he puts it himself, Romain was “Born in France, raised in Hong Kong, Taiwan & USA”, and his “rootless background aspires him to dream of a borderless cosmos where everyone dances in harmony to the rhythm of any melody.”

In a short span of time, and since a Boiler Room debut at Shi Fu Miz Festival in 2018, Romain has transformed his radio platform Fauve Radio into Fauve Records, and made an impact on a slew of credible imprints from across the globe including Kalahari Oyster Cult, Permanent Vacation, Polari, 禁JIN and EskimoRecordings. Currently based in France, Romain’s releases have consequently made it into the hands of DJ Harvey at Pikes Ibiza, Marcel Dettmann in Berghain/Panorama Bar, Gerd Janson at Robert Johnson, Orpheu The Wizard at Dekmantel, Skatebard at Igloo Festival, just to name a few.

Founder of Peels Records, an audiophile bar and vinyl store concept with locations in Bandung and Bali, Munir aka Midnight Runners has garnered a reputation as one of Asia’s most exciting music archivists and diggers. Like Romain, his musical landscape has no walls, taking influences from music from around the world and mostly with the domain of disco and funk.

His label Peace Freedom gives him the space to dive into Indonesian dangdut labels, collecting label logos from once-revered-and-now-almost-forgotten Indian record labels to resurrecting lost gems from Jakarta’s steamy disco era. Under his aliases, Midnight Runners and Munir, the Indonesian artist has landed original productions on Omega Supreme, Hobo Camp, 1asia, Neon Finger, Star Creature and Spacedust Records.

There are two undeniable common links between Romain FX & Midnight Runners. We’ve mentioned their undying commitment to tracing back and evolving music from lost and past generations; a second would be their unabashed and gleefully ecstatic energy behind the decks that make for truly magical dance floor moments.

On Friday, 25 August, we place these young maestros side by side for an unforgettable evening of timeless music curation, in the heart of Hong Kong’s city centre.

The event is hosted through a partnership between Mixmag Asia and Salon 10 — a live music venue and brand in Hong Kong that curates events and concepts in the city, and soon around Asia.
