A new archive captures the madness of clubbing in the early '90s

Tilman Brembs is a German photographer who was well and truly among the techno scene throughout the world back in the day. Berlin, Paris, Tokyo: he was there.

Working for a magazine called Frontpage in the 90s, Brembs used his "point and shoot" camera to capture exactly what was going down in the clubs. After years of having them archived, Brembs, luckily for us and you, has shared them online as part of his Zeitmaschine project.

On why he finally decided to make the snaps available, he says: "I had been waiting quite a while before I started to occupy myself with these images again, to view and scan them. Sometimes it takes a couple of years of time to be able to view things from a different angle.

"Today it is a treasure more valuable than I could have ever imagined. The pictures are like good wine, the longer it matures the better it gets. Viewing some of the photos today I suddenly become aware of the situation again, I can literally smell, hear and feel them."

We've put a selection in the gallery above - familiar faces like Sven Väth, Carl Cox, Paul van Dyk and Richie Hawtin feature - and they're absolute gold. A lot like these that document the history of clubbing.
