Names from Asia and the Asian diaspora you should keep an eye and ear out for

  • MIXMAG ASIA CREW
  • 15 August 2024

As we've proudly mentioned before, the Asian scene is thriving. Among the plethora of talent spread across the region and diaspora, we keep on excitedly unearthing more and more names that may not be too familiar to some but are definitely worth your attention.

In the spirit of sharing, Mixmag Asia will be featuring a number of arguably under-the-radar artists who are currently making exciting noise in — and freshly out of — their respective scenes.

Prepare to expand your playlists.

Kimmah (Netherlands)

Dutch DJ and producer Kimmah has experienced a rapid rise since her 2021 radio debut, performing non-stop at top Netherlands clubs and touring Vietnam twice in 2022. In addition to recently finishing her Asia tour this year, she also joined Rotterdam's Pinkman Records roster for their 2023 world tour. She also joined POING as their resident last year. Upon revisiting Vietnam after a decade, Kimmah connected with the vibrant local music scene, meeting many talented artists who lack recognition in the West due to geographical barriers, inspiring her to come up with Scattered Waves—a platform for Asian (especially Vietnamese) electronic music to gain exposure in Europe.

Taste of Blue (Hong Kong)

Specialising in techno, breaks, electro, and bass, Taste of Blue’s recent Room 2 set supporting Flowdan in Hong Kong was a standout, forcing Mixmag Asia to take a closer look at the artist. A growing presence on the regional circuit, the DJ, producer, and promoter is the founder of two party labels: techno-driven NoManZone 無人之境, whose “Countdown Festival” is approaching its ninth anniversary; and Prion Era 月元, a breaks, electro, and broken beat-focused community event. The Hong Kong native also counts himself an Abyss resident and is committed to mentoring DJs with real performance opportunities. So, what does the near future look like for Taste of Blue? For starters, he will travel to Taiwan next month for a mini-tour with performances at OTO Basho in Kaohsiung and at Taipei’s Studio 9. And, on the production front, he promises more original releases alongside a Prion Era mixtape featuring artists from around the world in the coming year.

Shaun Moses (India)

Fresh off his European Tour, seems like Shaun Moses has no intention of slowing down. In addition to being the first Asian artist to be signed with Secret Cinema’s Gem Agency earlier this year, he’s also the first Goan to be featured on HÖR Berlin during their tour in India. When it comes to his music, the techno trailblazer packs his tracks with raw, pulsating beats, heavy subs, and relentless grooves; it’s no wonder he’s quickly becoming a favourite among techno enthusiasts. Known for his explosive DJ sets and diverse label roster which includes Octopus Recordings, Senso Sounds, Tronic Music, and Gem Records to name a few, Shaun and his alias MOSES truly stand out in the global techno scene, catching the ears of big names like Charlotte De Witte and Paul Ritch.

Chalo (Thailand)

DJ, producer, performer, engineer, and label boss Chalo has been a prominent figure in Asia’s music scene for some time now. His sound is a dynamic blend, drawing from a diverse spectrum of genres, including house, bass-heavy techno, and intricate breakbeat. Alongside Vell, Chalo co-runs Boiled Wonderland, one of our labels to watch in 2024. The label is currently releasing a vinyl-only series titled ‘Made from Moss’, aimed squarely at the dance floor. The first installment drops on August 16, and is golden start-to-finish. What truly captured our attention is Chalo’s versatility and innovation. Beyond his standout track on FuFu Records’ recent compilation, he also hosts a weekly live set series called Closed Loops Live, where 95% of the music is improvised—believe us, we've been tuning in regularly.
