SHIMA's latest emotionally charged single samples a Japanese folk fishing song

Japan’s SHIMA unveils her latest single '1807' via TOKiMONSTA's Young Art Records.

The track is a captivating fusion of SHIMA’s Japanese heritage and contemporary melodic electronica.

With its ethereal flutes, atmospheric synths, and rhythmic percussion, ‘1807’ is rooted by the sampled Japanese folk song, bridging the gap between traditional sounds and modern influences.

In speaking about the single, SHIMA shared, “’1807’ samples a Japanese folk song once sung by fishermen in the Hokkaido region as they worked on their sailboats to catch cod. Unfortunately, the regional dialect used in the song is becoming increasingly rare, and it’s crucial that we recognise the importance of preserving this aspect of our culture.”

She added, “By combining this ancient folk song with modern synths and fresh influences, I hope to contribute to the ongoing preservation and evolution of these traditions.”
