Planet Turbo Records launches with bass-laden VA
"With elements of UKG, grime, future garage and jungle, people can get a taste for the variety of styles that we love.”
After running parties in the South Korean capital for two years, UK bass collective Planet Turbo recently added “record label” to its resume by launching Planet Turbo Records on October 1 with a seven-track compilation.
Spanning a range of bass genres, ‘Planet Turbo Volume 1’ draws together productions from Seoul bass stalwarts as well as new and overseas talents.
Of the VA’s curation, Planet Turbo co-founder Mike Shins tells Mixmag Asia, “The thought process behind the compilation was to cover a wide range of sounds, much as [our] parties do. With elements of UKG, grime, future garage and jungle, people can get a taste for the variety of styles that we love.”

“The label will focus on Asian and Asia-based artists, with an obvious focus on Korea, and for the first compilation we chose young and upcoming artists such as Sawteeth and Morelo, alongside scene OGs Lobotome, Mignon and 2STEP GAKSULI (AKA Seesea). Also featured is Jacotanu from the Spraybox team in Japan...and of course Planet Turbo’s very own DJ Total 90 (aka Mordecai).”

The release marks an exciting new era for the nascent bass scene in Seoul, a city that is otherwise heavily focused on 4/4 genres — a fact not lost on the Planet Turbo crew, one of whose signature artwork designs satirically features its globe mascot holding a sign that reads, “NO DISCO!”
Planet Turbo, which calls Cakeshop its home for its monthly events, promises to drop a second VA, ‘Planet Turbo Volume 2’, in December ahead of further releases and collaborations in the new year.
‘Planet Turbo Volume 1’ is available on Bandcamp, purchase or listen to it here.
