Minimal pop-tech trailblazer SOHMI bestows 4 captivating tracks on ‘Recital EP’
The celestial release documents her transformation from classical pianist to genre-pioneering sensation
LA-based Korean-American producer SOHMI released her debut ‘Recital EP’ on April 7 via Thrive Music — a label that also houses the likes of Nervo, ACRAZE, Chinese-American producer XIE and more.
SOHMI spent most of her life growing up in Hong Kong and Korea. After a life-changing move from New York City to Los Angeles in 2016, SOHMI dove headfirst into the house and techno scene.
Since then, she’s performed at Ultra Korea 2019, became the first Korean-American resident of LA’s renowned underground house and techno club, Sound, plus founded her own record label, Permission.

The four-track EP showcases a harmonious blend of her self-pioneered ‘minimal pop-tech’ genre and touches on themes of escapism and metamorphism.
Having previously released three of its tracks, SOHMI rounds up her EP with the title track ‘Recital’, which features sultry vocal work and shining synths that add to the overall transportive, ethereal soundscape.
Each single features lyrics that reflect different autobiographical moments of her journey through life, including the struggles of cultural and societal pressures as a first generation Korean-American.

“‘Recital’, the track, is the soundtrack to all the many daydreams I’ve had over the course of my childhood and life, which were always about becoming some kind of performer for as long as I can remember. While I’m singing over nearly the entire track, there are no real lyrics, just freestyled humming, as one might while daydreaming about becoming something and somebody bigger than themselves in an alternate version of life,” explains SOHMI.
Along with the EP’s release comes an intimate trailer video. In it, the artist transitions from a classically trained pianist to the poised figure in electronic music she’s become today.
