Matt FX launches Non-Friction Records with weekly rollout of tracks
The new label introduces itself with ‘Mira Como Bailo’ on September 12, followed by new tracks each week through October 3
Matt FX is launching his new label, Non-Friction Records, this month.
The Brooklyn-based house and indie dance label will release a new single every Friday starting September 12.
The label opens with ‘Mira Como Bailo’, a collaboration between Matt and Mexico City producer Dan Solo. Described as a jubilant, 303-driven cut, the track signals the tone of what’s to come.
Matt explains to Mixmag Asia about the motivation behind starting the label: “This whole thing started because I got tired of waiting. Waiting for the right label, or the right time, the right album cover, etc. But then something amazing happened.. I realised some of my closest friends were tired too.”
He continues: “Over the last few months a path began to emerge quite naturally where I realised the easiest thing to possibly do would be to just say fuck it and open up the floodgates. Here we go!”
The rollout continues with ‘Kawasaki’ on September 19, a three-way collaboration with New York artists Kristos and Mona Matsuoka.
September 26 brings ‘Make It Strong’ from Montreal producer The Fitness, and October 3 closes the first run with ‘Sauté’ from Maximum Flavour, Matt’s project with Giorgio Beatsaface.
Matt says the locations of his collaborators are a key part of Non-Friction’s sound: “If I have learned anything through touring over the last few years, it’s the sheer power a memory wields when it involves a moment of musical brilliance paired with a specific, special place.”
He adds, “In the long term, I’ve got big plans for Non-Friction that involve working with artists from all over the world, from Chengdu to Casablanca.”

Asia also plays a key role in the label’s outlook.
“I have no doubt that the first Non-Friction releases to come from artists outside North America will be from Asia. My tour last year was such a life-changing experience and I’m so pumped to help release some of the artists I met while traveling out there.”

Matt is already tuned in to a wide range of artists shaping the scene across the continent and its diaspora.
“It’s been amazing to watch homies like Baalti and Morgan get their flowers and I’ve also been loving everything forthcoming that B.ai has been teasing. I’m a huge stan of Mr Ho and Mogwaa, and I don’t remember the last time I played an extended set without dropping Bolis Pupul. Pat Lok is on a tear with his recent run of releases, Motleyflower out of Bangkok is working on some really cool shit, Ballads will always get a spin if I’m in need of a cheeky edit, and Que Sakamoto continues to blow my mind with his signature brand of delirium,” the artist shares.
He continues: “There are also some amazing producers and DJs representing the Asian diaspora coming up out of New York right now; Jialing, Zeemuffin, Nick AM, Choukroun, Firungi, Manimogo, Amyjor, Boyyyish…and this is just off the top of my head!”
