Thailand has Songkran, China has Chinese New Year, and Bangladesh has Pohela Boishakh.

Perhaps less prominent on the global stage, but the Bengali new year celebration is a celebration worth witnessing, and The Breakfast Club made a striking debut with their inaugural festival held over the holiday.

About a thousand people flocked to Breakfast Club Dhaka 1433 across 4 stages, including the Mixmag Asia x Bhai Bhai Soundsystem collab stage, which spotlighted a handpicked number of notable South Asian selectors: JON4KI, Kahli, Lyla, Nida, Ratna and Socketjumpa.

Mostly considered the bass stage, it moved through swarms of drum’n’bass, garage, house and much more, all of which had that South Asian magic, each with each set carrying a distinct energy. Seems like Bangladesh loves its bass.

On the other stages, the line-ups were no less impressive, with international legends, local heroes and everything in between, playing a slew of genres but mostly contained in the house realm.

The Budakid and M.A.N.D.Y. b2b over at the Bonobibir Dak stage was one for the ages, and Boogaloo Jones’ sunrise set was a moment of serenity, but far from still.

Local artists all brought their A game too, with OMDG, The Brown Testament, Readhwan and Tawsiv all delivering their spin on electronic through a Bengali lens.

Beyond the music, the grounds housed a market featuring local brands, live traditional performances, poolside sunrise vinyl sets, and a commanding main stage, all dressed in décor rooted in the spirit of Pohela Boishakh.

One thing is clear: people in Bangladesh know how to celebrate the New Year. Palpable energy, barely a phone in sight, and a sense of freedom and joy that made for a truly special celebration of a truly special occasion.

Bangladesh’s nightlife and its players are quickly becoming an insider’s secret (IYKYK), and this event was just a snapshot of what's to come.
