Aroop Roy lands in Asia for a six-date June run

UK-based DJ, producer and label head Aroop Roy is heading to Asia this month for a six-date run across Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.

Roy has built his reputation over two decades by pulling from house, garage, techno, jazz, disco and global rhythms and weaving them into something coherent on the dancefloor.

He's a Glitterbox Ibiza resident, has played We Out Here, Defected Croatia and Southport Weekender, and recently signed to Kerri Chandler's Kaoz Theory. Forthcoming remixes for Basement Jaxx, Mr Scruff and Marcos Valle are also in the pipeline.

His label, Vive La Musique, reissues and reworks rare recordings spanning Caribbean Zouk, Congolese Rumba, French jazz-fusion and South African soul, and has found support among tastemakers globally.

When asked how much his approach shifts across different cities on consecutive nights, he tells Mixmag Asia: "I'll always have tunes in mind that I want to play—whether they are new productions to test or tunes I feel are primed for the occasion. If there is a clear theme to the party (e.g. Do It Jazz at Kyoto Metro), I'd use that as a central reference point for the night. But in general, it's about what vibes are flowing at the moment I get in the booth. The length of the set is also important. I prefer longer sets as I can take the crowd on a more patient and subtle journey across a wide spectrum of sounds."

The Tokyo date carries personal weight. Roy previously lived in the city and ran nights there. On returning as a visitor, he shares: "I'm delighted to have the chance to play in Tokyo again. Having been very active in the scene here in the past, the city holds special meaning and I'm intrigued to see where things are at now."

Talking to the people shaping the scene in that city now has reinforced that feeling: "I had a great chat with the promoter Kairi from The Library about his efforts to build a house music community in the city and it’s inspiring to see the new generation following a similar path to the one myself and others took many years ago. The scenario seems very similar and the challenges of putting on independent nights are still present. But I'm confident Kairi and his crew will be successful at developing the community and I look forward to playing my part with my set on Friday!"
