Audio Asia: sunshine flavours on Aroop Roy's 'Hustle Do Brasil'

Title: Hustle Do Brasil
Artist: Aroop Roy
Label: Kampana
Release Date: Out now

A little bit of merry-making goes a long way in life, and few could argue that the world is currently in dire need of even the merest of upticks when it comes to good time vibing. Enter global groove purveyor Aroop Roy to shine a little light with his latest production offering – the blissfully sun-soaked 'Hustle Do Brasil' EP.

Fans of Aroop Roy's work will know that his is a far-reaching sound – be it from the studio or on the turntables – that takes onboard the very best rhythm-heavy flavours from every inch of planet earth. Taking the form of original productions, meticulously curated esoteric gems, and respectfully repurposed edits, his sets and productions tend to offer a contemporary twist on international dance music from across the sands of time. Following the excellent list of Wonderfruit-inspired favourite tracks he furnished us with last year, we were thrilled to see his most recent release hit the stores. The 'Hustle Do Brasil' EP comes as a highly collectable seven-inch vinyl version, while the Bandcamp digital version also includes an extended bonus version of the title track.

The release features dusty-fingered edits of a pair of Brazilian disco-boogie gems, with each benefiting from a deft sprinkling of Aroop's rework magic. 'Hustle Do Brasil (Aroop Roy Rework)' is an undeniable slice of floor-filling dynamite, with its wildly infectious piano lick and rolling bass riding over loose percussion as sampled elements elegantly tease in and out. 'A Festa (Aroop Roy Edit)' is just a shade more horizontal in nature, but no less arresting. Once the looped-up intro unfolds the samba feel here is tangible, with the summery instrumentation and silky vocal line leaving no room for doubt as to the origin of the source material. Strummed guitars, dreamy chords and lively bass interplay beautifully, making this a tropical beach-side classic in the making. This is almost literally begging to be played out loud to a free-spirited crowd as the sun dips below the horizon line... Here's hoping that can happen before too long.
