Apple Music will inform listeners if music on its platform is AI-generated, but only if labels and rights-holders declare use of the tech.

According to Music Week, the streaming service announced that it will introduce "Transparency Tags" via a newsletter last week (March 4), which will require music uploaders to submit information on AI usage as part of a track's metadata.

Rights-holders will have to declare if AI has been used in the creation of four components: Artwork, track, composition, and music video. The "track tag" flags if AI has been used on a "material portion" of the recording, while the "composition tag" details use of the tech in elements such as lyrics.

“Proper tagging of content is the first step in giving the music industry the data and tools needed to develop thoughtful policies around AI,” the music giant said in a statement. “We believe labels and distributors must take an active role in reporting when the content they deliver is created using AI.”

However, Music Week highlights that the responsibility to report and identify if AI has been used in the creation of music will be with labels and rights-holders.

French music streaming service Deezer recently reported that it receives around 60,000 AI-generated tracks each day (around 39% of its daily intake), claiming to be the “only music streaming platform to explicitly tag AI-generated music” in the world.
