AlphaTheta's new CDJ-1500X lets DJs play sets with just their phone

AlphaTheta just dropped the CDJ-1500X, a compact multi-player designed for smaller-sized venues and home setups where space is tight but the gear still needs to perform.

The unit borrows a lot from the flagship CDJ-3000X, just packed into a smaller unit that's easier to squeeze into a cramped booth or pair with turntables.

It carries over the 3000X's 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen, and the browse screen can show up to 15 tracks at once. Waveform previews now flag vocal positions, BPM changes, and phrase structure, so you get a better sense of where a track's headed mid-mix.

There's also a new Playlist Edit function that lets you reorder playlists right on the unit; no laptop or USB re-export required.

Built-in Wi-Fi is probably the headline feature. rekordbox CloudDirectPlay pulls tracks straight from cloud libraries without needing a USB stick, while StreamingDirectPlay hooks into Apple Music, Beatport Streaming, and Tidal.

You can also tap your phone against the unit via NFC and your settings and playlists load up automatically. In short; DJs could technically show up to a gig with nothing but their phone.

It's the first AlphaTheta player built for CoBeat, a crowd-interaction service launching July 9. This optional feature lets crowds scan a QR code, browse the DJ's curated list, vote on tracks, or send requests that pop up on the CDJ screen, with emoji reactions landing on the DJ's phone.

Design-wise, it keeps a matte black finish, customisable LED lighting across 12 colours, and side screw holes for optional panels.

Priced at US$1,699, learn more about it and purchase here.
