Redecorate your digital life with 400 free stills from Studio Ghibli movies

But only on one condition: they may only be used with ‘Common Sense’

By now you’ve surely crushed all the entire Studio Ghibli filmography that hit Netflix and HBO this year, right? Well, the cult animation house is continuing to gift its loyal fans by releasing 400 high-resolution images from eight of its movies that are now available to download for free. But, there’s a catch — you may only use them with common sense.

Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki said in a handwritten note: “Please use them freely within the scope of common sense.”

What does this mean? Most likely he’s giving fans the green light to share the stills on social media and make artwork out of them…just not for profit.

The shots come from movies like When Marnie Was There, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, The Wind Rises, From Up on Poppy Hill, The Secret World of Arrietty, Ponyo, Tales from Earthsea and Best Animated Feature Oscar winner Spirited Away.

The release of the stills comes at a time when the brand is having a moment in mainstream media. Since the filmography started streaming in the US thanks to HBO and globally with Netflix, characters from films like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away have gone viral globally.

The revered animation house is also working on its first major work in many years, a CGI animated feature called Earwig and the Witch by Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki’s son Goro. The film is due out this December in Japan.
