Yaeji explored her Korean heritage in a humble video for 'What We Drew'

Korean-American DJ and producer Yaeji's life is pretty much an odyssey. Born in New York before moving back to her motherland in the third grade, then going back to the US for university, Yaeji has perfectly adapted both cultures throughout her life — themes that are hugely present in her music. Dropping her debut LP 'What We Drew' on April 2, Yaeji has released her second music video from the LP just ahead of its official release.

'What We Drew' is the second music video Yaeji released from her forthcoming mixtape album. The first video, 'Waking Up Down', was released last month when she announced her debut release. The video was inspired by opening sequences from classic anime and based entirely on Yaeji's own character designs and illustrations. In contrast to this, 'What We Drew' was filmed in Korea with culture crews Dawnqmentary and Dadaism Club, and Yaeji's friends as well as her grandfather.

The six-minute music video begins with Yaeji's friends introducing themselves followed by a casual conversation between Yaeji and her grandfather in a park. Later, the video follows the artist's cult and humorous style of visuals — with Yaeji sharing glimpses of what her daily life is like in Korea, including having dinner with friends and dancing in a dream with an onion. Watch the music video below:

Like ‘Waking Up Down’, ‘What We Drew’ is sung in Korean and features Yaeji’s ethereal vocals over a housey electronic track. “This song is about sharing love and gratitude with the people you call family,” the artist said in a statement. “Dawn and our friends helped bring my nostalgia for Korea to life.”

Though the video portrays the artist’s life in Korea, Yaeji, in fact, resides in Brooklyn, New York.

The mixtape is to be supported by a string of tour dates across North America and Europe beginning in June. Hopefully, by summer, the COVID-19 situation will get better as currently as this album, out today, is sure to pique curiosity surrounding the artist. Already in the last few years, there’s been a buzz around Yaeji following a plethora of short releases and collaborations. There’s no cancellation or postponement announcement from Yaeji about the tour; she’s probably crossing her fingers too.
