Photo exhibition revisits Hanoi in the 1990s
British photographer Andy Soloman's prints cover streets, markets, schools & factories from his years in Vietnamese capital
As part of its 125th anniversary programme, Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi has acquired 16 signed, limited-edition prints by British photographer Andy Soloman.
The collection goes on show in an exhibition titled Hanoi: Traces of Time at the hotel, running from October 9 to December 9, 2026.
Soloman first arrived in Hanoi in October 1992 as a photojournalist from London. He travelled widely across Vietnam and joined Reuters in 1997. Today he divides his time between the UK and Vietnam.
The 16 images were taken between 1992 and 1998 and record everyday life in Hanoi, from streets and markets to schools and factories.
In one, cyclo drivers relax in front of a shuttered colonial-era doorway in November 1992. In another, from the Binh Da firecracker market in 1993, men inspect long strips of firecrackers laid across woven mats.

One titled Heroic Mothers, taken in Ba Dinh in April 1998, shows women in headscarves with medals pinned to their tunics, standing in front of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.
“Vietnam has been central to my photography for many years, and the images in this collection come from encounters and moments that have stayed with me,” Soloman shares.
