Just out yesterday (May 16), Peggy Gou has curated a compilation on her imprint, Gudu Records.
‘Gudu & Friends Vol.1’ includes eight tracks from mix of label mates like DMX Krew, Hiver, Dukwa, Brain de Palma and Mogwaa, plus Gudu debuts from Closet Yi, Salamanda and Lady Blacktronika.
This is the first in a series of annual compilations, for which the artwork of each release will be tied to the Lunar New Year. 2023 marks the year of the rabbit, hence the animated rabbits dancing in the shape of a moon; the artwork is spearheaded by Gudu Records’ regular collaborator, Jin Young Choi, who is also behind the illustration of the Gudu Mix series.
The release includes label merch like a baseball cap and tee with the artwork design and a cassette version of the compilation.
No different to Gou’s ventures into fashion, the compilation is packed with dance floor diversity, traversing mid-tempo grooves, house oddities and breakbeat splendour.
Gudu, which means “shoe” in Korean, was launched in 2019 with early releases from the likes of Gou, Maurice Fulton and Soulwax.
‘Gudu & Friends Vol.1’ is out now on Gudu Records. Have a listen below and grab your copy here.
