'Monkey Mixes' takes over 宀 club for groovy livestream

Being the first 100% malt whisky made for mixing, it comes as no surprise that Monkey Shoulder would crossover to blending another element its market loves so much; music.

Delivering quality tunes for the right melange, Monkey Mixes is built for music enthusiasts, offering an array of exclusive DJ sets to indulge in. Responding to the very first lockdowns in 2021, it emerged as a way to support the local DJ community — and continues to do so until this very day.

With past mixes by the likes of VICE BEATS, Savage Henry, Skratch Bastid, Madame Electrifie and more encompassing every genre out there, this time Monkey Shoulder shines the spotlight on three Hong Kong-based producers who embody the cheeky, playful and unconventional spirit that comes with mixing and experimentation — exactly what music and malt whisky were made for.

Get ready to revel in Xiaolin’s blend of rare groove, lesser-known soul, reggae, post-punk and a touch of disco nostalgia. The 宀 resident and HEX club night founder shares how “since Monkey Shoulder is an unconventional type of whisky with complex flavours, I didn't feel like making just a regular club kind of mix,” preferring to “focus on what the taste sounds like.”

Then there’s Sam Futura — born in France and moved to Hong Kong in 2014 where he established Cliché Records and expanded the sounds of the city’s underground. He then went on to co-found Savage Hanoi in 2018.

“I wanted to play some house and disco records from the 90’s music era, which is to me an endless source of inspiration,” he mentions about his mix. Picture this; endless summers, tropical nights, a cold glass of your favourite drink in hand… There’s no better scenario to enjoy his dreamy-sounding set in.

Fellow Frenchman Maximus MMC also joins this edition of Monkey Mixes. Now also based in Hong Kong, he’s endeavoured on multiple music projects including his 2020 EP ‘BLEU’ and 2021’s house music release ‘Cydonia’. Always one to push the sonic boundaries of beat-making, Maximus MMC is notorious for his genre-blending sets that highlight the uniqueness and nuance of each track it employs.

“The authenticity of these artists that I picked is what talks to me the most. This indescribable feeling that I sense through music and art, in general, is what inspires me on a daily basis and why I fell in love with music,” he explains.

All three artists will perform their distinct Monkey Mixes sets on Instagram Live, broadcasted from Hong Kong’s prominent 宀 club on December 29 from 6-8pm (GMT+8) — make sure to mark your calendar for this one.
