Laura Zhang’s ‘Violet Veil’ Hong Kong exhibition to feature atmospheric sound & live performances

Violet Veil, a solo exhibition by mixed-media artist Laura Zhang, opens December 11 at The Extension in Tai Hang and runs through December 19.

The exhibition brings together new paintings and process-driven works shaped by Zhang’s interest in intuitive mark-making, gradual layering and the emergence of images through repeated gestures.

Her approach reflects a longstanding engagement with drawing, meditative practices and the shifting sense of place that comes with relocation.

Growing up on Lamma Island in a Chinese–British family, she moved between cultural influences early on, later studying Fine Art at the University of Leeds before returning to Hong Kong to work across education, curation and artist representation.

These experiences, alongside recent large-scale commissions for Louis Vuitton in Macau, Hong Kong and Beijing, have contributed to a practice that moves confidently between analogue and digital methods.

Sound throughout the exhibition is composed by Yadin Moha, adding an aural layer that deepens the atmosphere of the painted works.

Now based in the French Alps, Zhang continues to develop a visual language attentive to rhythm, surface and transition.

The exhibition also features poetry and sonic contributions by movement and sound artist Jane Kim of UJU who works between Hong Kong and Berlin.

A special programme with UJU takes place on Saturday, December 13. Two gong-journey sessions run from 2–3pm and 4–5pm (limited capacity; each includes a 40-minute gong journey, tea and snacks).

In the evening, UJU presents a live ambient listening session from 8–11 pm, an extended soundwork designed as a focused listening experience in the gallery. Make your bookings here.

Violet Veil runs through December 19 at The Extension; further details here.
