Clockenflap 2025 adds new mobile theatre experience, Minimax: The Planets
Created by festival Co-Founder Jay Hofmann-Forster, the work uses mobile structures, musicians, dancers & audience interaction
Clockenflap Music & Arts Festival will debut Minimax: The Planets, adding a roaming theatrical experience to its weekend programme on December 5-7.
Supported by the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme, Minimax turns walkways, queuing areas, and open spaces into live performance zones that move through the crowd and unfold without a fixed stage.
Created by festival Co-Founder and Artistic Director Jay Hofmann-Forster and designed by Obie Chan, the work uses mobile structures, musicians, dancers, and audience interaction.
It is written and directed by Benjamin Smith and reimagines Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite as a live performance where each planet is portrayed through sound and movement styles including electronic music, jazz, street dance, voguing, hip hop, circus, and contemporary performance.
Minimax joins a 2025 programme featuring Vaundy’s first public performance outside Japan, Rich Brian, French nu-disco act L’Impératrice, Digitalism (DJ set), Dave Clarke, Riria, Portishead frontwoman Beth Gibbons, Special Request, and RSD.

The production is set to move around the festival site throughout the weekend, offering attendees multiple chances to encounter it.
Homegrown artists anchor the cast and creative team, including emerging jazz players, a community choir, street dance crews, and students from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

“Minimax is about pushing the boundaries of what live performance can be—creating theatre that is mobile, modular, and alive within the festival grounds,” said Hofmann-Forster.
“We wanted to transform a transient space into one of connection and wonder, where audiences are not just spectators but participants in the experience. At its heart, Minimax celebrates Hong Kong’s can-do spirit and the incredible talent of our creative community, while opening the door to new collaborations with international artists,” he adds.
