Boards of Canada criticise The White House for using their music in political messaging

A new track from Boards of Canada has been used without consent to soundtrack a promotional video shared by the Trump administration’s White House.

A snippet of the duo’s track ‘Deep Time’, which is due to be included on their forthcoming album ‘Inferno’, was used in a video shared on X on May 28.

The promotional video shows grainy, VHS-style footage of the US national flag flying, alongside clips of military helicopters, boats, and the White House.

Boards of Canada fans flocked to the comments, arguing that the duo's long-time label Warp Records should "copyright strike these fascist fucks".

"DO NOT disrespect Boards of Canada by using their music in your propaganda," one said. "Don’t ever fucking use Boards of Canada for this authoritarian fascism bullshit," another wrote.

The duo have since said that the track was used without their consent in the 15-second clip, telling Mixmag: "Warp Records and Boards of Canada do not condone the unauthorised use of their music for political messaging."

Boards of Canada’s first album in some 13 years, ‘Inferno’, is due to land today (May 29). The 18-track record follows 2013’s acclaimed ‘Tomorrow’s Harvest’.

Last month, the sibling duo invited fans to an exclusive first-listen of their forthcoming album with listening sessions hosted around the world last week, taking place across London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, and more.

The record was announced in April after plenty of online speculation from fans as cryptic VHS tapes featuring a hexagonal-shaped logo were shipped to Warp fans, and posters featuring the same logo appeared all over the globe.
