Aili returns with more irresistible electro-pop in ‘Babychan’
"This is our first love song (and the only love song on the album)."
Japanese-Belgian duo Aili have dropped their latest single, ‘Babychan’, — the second track from their highly anticipated debut album, 'Nandakke?'.
For this track, members Aili Maruyama and Orson Wouters delve into a theme that’s most definitely a popular one but a first for them as a duo; love.
"This is our first love song (and the only love song on the album)," explains Maruyama. "It’s about the first phase of a relationship when you’re completely absorbed by love. We directly translated Dutch idioms into Japanese sentences. We don’t know if those sayings are correct, but we hope people will understand us. This might be confusing, but that’s what love is all about."

In typical Aili fashion, the track deviates from your typical love ballad into a dynamic cut characterised by the interplay of looping acidic bleeps and razor-sharp synth elements that add a layer of complexity. The percussion, with its rattling quality, not only establishes a rhythmic backbone but also enhances the overall vibrancy of the composition.

Maruyama's unique vocals serve as the crowning touch to this eclectic sonic tapestry, bringing forth an emotive dimension as it's layered over the electronic landscape.
Aili’s anticipated debut album 'Nandakke?' is set for release on February 23, 2024, via Eskimo Recordings.
