Nu-jazz meets deep house on Yuu Udagawa’s latest summer sizzler
‘Spectral’ is cocktail-in-hand, sun-on-your-face, not-a-care-in-the-world type of music
Tokyo-based artist Yuu Udagawa unveils her latest single 'Spectral' today, released with UK label Trusted Rhythm.
Clocking in at eight minutes, the slow burner of a track evolves gradually, traversing various sonic landscapes and tones. Rooted in deep house and nu-jazz, it glides effortlessly through its analogue synth motifs, coupled with looping basslines, measured kicks and much more.
The track shifts tone when the stunning vocals come in, coupled with jazz piano sprinkled in loosely to add that extra layer of charm. The nu-jazz elements of ‘Spectral’ are what make it shine and stand out among the crowd of typical synth-heavy deep house.

Its uplifting tone is underscored by masterfully delivered lyrics, making the vocal version much more captivating than the dub alone. Perfect for a leisurely listen under-the-sun, without-a-care-in-the-world type of music.

Yuu Udagawa spoke with Mixmag Asia about the track, saying, “This piece came together naturally, almost as effortlessly as breathing. The electric piano solo in the second half was recorded in a single take and used just as it was. Normally, I record multiple takes, selecting the best parts and experimenting extensively. However, this time, it felt as if the creation was guided by something mysterious.”
