The House Collective hosts biennial art project ‘Encounters Across Cultures’

The House Collective, a hotel brand dedicated to providing artistic and culturally immersive accommodation experiences, officially launched its biennial art project for 2023; Encounters Across Cultures.

It invites four artists and musicians to visit the cities where the brand’s four hotels are located; The Upper House in Hong Kong, The Opposite House in Beijing, The Temple House in Chengdu, and The Middle House in Shanghai.

The theme for this year, 'When Art Meets Technology', sets the stage for an ambitious and innovative exploration that merges the worlds of the two mentioned aspects. It involves creating sensory experiences using technology, turning intangible emotions into a shared collective experience that can be enjoyed in each of the residences.

The ultimate goal? To dismantle barriers between people, cultures, and urban environments.

The participating artists in this project encompass a diverse range of talent. Among them is Keith Lam, a media artist and co-founder of the art and technology studio, Dimension Plus. Lam's innovative works have garnered recognition at esteemed international art festivals such as Prix Ars Electronica and Japan Media Arts Festival.

Another artist involved is Vicky Fung, who excels as both an artist and music producer. Fung has collaborated with numerous prominent music artists in Hong Kong and has earned an impressive array of music awards from esteemed media and professional associations.

Joining the team is Tjoe, a London-based musician and producer renowned for his skills as a guitarist. His contributions add a unique musical dimension to the project, enriching the dialogue between art and technology.

Wan Pin Chu, an internationally acclaimed erhu player and film composer based in Hong Kong, also lends his talents to this endeavour. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the first Chinese instrumentalist to perform in The Duke's Hall at the Royal Academy of Music in the United Kingdom.

Together, these artists are set to create a multidimensional dialogue that explores the interplay of cities, life experiences, and memories through the medium of art.

The art project operates by capturing the artists' journeys and converting their biometric data into personalised musical compositions and data sculptures.

Spanning across the fall months from October to January, the artist's work will be exhibited in The House Collective’s four hotels.
