The Blessed Madonna gives Chicago house-inspired remix to Hikaru Utada’s ‘Mine or Yours’

After releasing her single ‘Mine or Yours’ in May—which reached No.13 on Japan’s Hottest 100 chart—Hikaru Utada returns with a fresh remix under the hands of The Blessed Madonna.

Following Yaeji’s reinterpretation earlier this month, The Blessed Madonna steps in with her GODSQUAD Mix, channeling the best of Chicago house legend Paul Johnson to this cinematic and introspective track from the Japanese artist.

The track, which in its original form feels like a suspension between melancholy and release, gains a fresh new personality through The Blessed Madonna’s GODSQUAD Mix.

A vinyl release is set to follow on November 26.

The remix, while reframing the original from Utada, does not overpower the distinctive vocals that give the melancholic feeling. Instead, The Blessed Madonna’s take enhances Utada’s voice, pairing it with the crisp percussion and a house groove that stands out from the very beginning of the track.

The Blessed Madonna—named Mixmag’s “finest selector of 2016”—reflects her love for Chicago house on this remix.

She explains: “When I sat down to do this, if I’m being honest, I literally said ‘what would Paul Johnson do if he sampled this?’ And that is literally what I did. As De La Soul said: I flipped it on 45 so you can dance to it”.

The visualiser for ‘Mine or Yours (The Blessed Madonna’s GODSQUAD Mix)’ was directed by Kazuki Gotand, who also directed Utada’s ‘Electricity’ remix music video.

In addition, Hikaru Utada’s SCIENCE FICTION TOUR 2024 concert film will premiere at Vieshow Cinemas across Taiwan on November 14, offering fans an immersive big-screen experience featuring dynamic visuals and 5.1 surround sound.
