SouthSide Summer takes over Hong Kong's Southern District for four weekends

SouthSide Summer, a new four-weekend festival, runs across Hong Kong's Murray House, The Pulse and The Repulse Bay from 22 August to 13 September.

Presented by UMAMI Events, Astro Entertainment Group and Carnaby Fair, the series of events combines music, art, wellness and community programming across the three Southside venues.

The festival is designed to run across the day, moving between activities rather than sticking to a single format.

The first two weekends (August 22-23 and August 29-30) are centred on Murray House and The Repulse Bay. Murray House hosts a two-floor UMAMI Dayparty with 17 DJs from independent artists and established collectives, alongside a marketplace running for one weekend.

The programme also includes The Road to Shi Fu Miz 10th Anniversary Edition, with headliners from Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand, sets from Afro Rave and Mosaik, along with A Chess Club X Mahjong Game Hall.

More than half a dozen wellness classes, including sound baths, pilates and yoga, run alongside the music. The Repulse Bay serves as the festival's wellness hub during this period, with residencies from Ikigai, Hkore, Mini Sports and XYZ.

The final two weekends (September 5-6 and September 12-13) move to The Pulse and The Repulse Bay. The Pulse hosts a two-court pickleball pop-up by Aces Pickleball Academy, bookable throughout its 5-13 September run, along with wellness events and a daytime party from Space. Communities including Rise, Eventfull, Tova, Sobersweat and The Field Trip HK join across these weekends, with a second marketplace on 5 and 6 September.

Additional programming includes a Pickle & Pizza Party, Puppy Yoga, plus a 2016-themed bikini and gelato rave. The Repulse Bay's wellness residencies continue throughout.

Olaf Hessing, co-organiser and SouthSide Summer's Head of Marcom, framed the event as accessible from across the city: “It's what we like to call a hometown holiday destination: a full daytrip escape without ever leaving city limits, and one that's genuinely easy to get to, whether you're coming from Sheung Wan, Wan Chai, Kennedy Town or anywhere on the island, or from Kowloon side.”

He continues: “We wanted to give Hong Kongers a reason to fall back in love with Southside, and tourists a reason to discover it for the first time, one weekend at a time.”
