Herd of sheep caught eating 100kg of cannabis

A flock of sheep stormed a greenhouse producing medicinal cannabis in Greece, and ate over 100kg of the crops due to an extreme flooding induced food shortage.

Storm Daniel hit the plains of Thessaly earlier this month, flooding towns and cities and killing 17 people and more than 100,000 animals over the course of three days. The flooding still affects the plains today, with much of the grass used for feeding livestock now decayed. This shortage of fresh grass led a particular herd of sheep to desperate measures.

In what local farmers are declaring an invasion, the flock found a medicinal cannabis greenhouse and wolfed down over 100kg of weed. A shepherd noticed the wooly animals acting weirdly, observing that they were jumping higher than goats - something that never happens.

Greece legalised cannabis for medicinal purposes in 2017, and earlier this year inaugurated the largest medicinal cannabis facility in Europe. The €40 million investment, which includes 21,000 square metres of greenhouses, an integrated production plant and a fully equipped research & development department, cements the country as a leading pharmaceutical exporter.

The farmers had already been left cursing their luck after losing the majority of their production from a heatwave and the flooding itself, their sanity has been drawn to the brink upon discovery that the rest of their medicinal grade grass had been grazed by a herd of sheep. The owner of the greenhouse told Newspaper.gr that he didn't know whether to laugh or to cry.
