Romain FX releases iconic ‘Spacer Woman’ Cantonese cover after 5-year wait

Hong Kong-raised producer Romain FX has dropped his long-awaited Cantonese cover of the Italo-disco classic ‘Spacer Woman’ via Sound Metaphors’ Bless You label.

The once-mysterious track has been a hit in the underground music scene for the past five years, with DJs like Orpheu The Wizard playing it in his closing set at Dekmantel and DJ Harvey spinning it at Pikes Ibiza, plus multiple appearances at Berghain and Panorama Bar.

Despite its popularity, the release was delayed due to a lengthy process of clearing the rights to the original track.

Now, the track is set to reach a wider audience thanks to the Berlin-based label.

“I've been trying for five years to clear the rights with the original copyright owner via multiple labels, but no luck, until now, when I reached out to Sound Metaphors for the project and after almost 6 months of negotiation we finally managed to clear the rights for the song,” explains Romain FX to Mixmag Asia.

The release includes three versions of the track: the 'Vocal Version', a 'Karaoke Version', and a more experimental 'Acid Trip Version'.

“I will perform the track Live at Clockenflap with the singer Kaona,” he shares with Mixmag Asia.

Romain’s fresh take on the Italo-disco classic revitalises a beloved track with a modern twist that pays homage to its roots, expertly capturing the hypnotic energy of the original while adding his own flair, thanks to Cheung Yuen Tung's Cantonese lyrics.

The 'Acid Trip Version' ramps up the excitement, featuring acid synth lines that crank up the dancefloor tension. It’s a wild ride that keeps the upbeat spirit of the original while layering in deeper bass tones and intricate sound design.

Celebrating the release, Romain will embark on an Asia live performance tour in November.
