New turntable allows you to play vinyl through a Sonos system

Long-running turntable manufacturer Victrola have announced a new record player, which will allow users to play vinyl through their Sonos systems.

With an expected shipping date of February 15, the Victrola Stream Onyx is fitted with an aluminium tonearm, and connects wirelessly to Sonos systems via the Victrola Stream app, as well as integrating with the Sonos app.

The turntable is belt-driven, and can play records at 33 and 45 RPM, and comes fitted with an Audio Technica AT-VM95E cartridge and needle.

For those without Sonos systems, the turntable will still be able to be connected traditionally via RCA cables.

It will cost $599 (£500) from the Victrola website, who is taking pre-orders now.

The Victrola Stream Onyx is the company’s second Sonos-compatible turntable, following the release of the more expensive $799 (£670) Stream Carbon model last year.

Speaking about the new turntable in a statement, Matthew Siegel, Chief Communications Officer from Sonos said: “Now verified by the Works with Sonos program, the new Victrola Stream makes it easy to enjoy all your favourite vinyl with great sound on Sonos.”

Victrola was originally founded in New Jersey, USA as the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1906, making early versions of turntables. To find out more visit the company’s official website.

It comes after the news that Sonos are preparing to launch a new generation of its smart speakers, known currently as the Era 100 and the Era 300, reported by The Verge.

The new speakers will be completely redesigned from the current models and fitted with spatial audio and Dolby Atmos technology. The Era 100 and Era 300 will compete with Apple’s HomePod and other smart home speakers.

The Verge also reported that the company was working on the next iteration of the Sonos Move – the popular portable speaker.
