Audio Asia: Mixmag Asia February floor burners
We digest 5 of the best releases from all corners of the continent
With Asian-based artists and labels turning out a constant stream of excellent music from right across the board, we're launching a new monthly segment to highlight some of our favourites. In each instalment, Mixmag Asia Floor Burners will present five releases that have piqued our collective interest in the month gone by, from the vast spectrum of underground electronic music.
February was a packed month, as labels got busy after the usual Christmas and New Year slow down. We saw high-grade efforts from Cabaret Recordings, Red Light's collaboration with Adeen Records, and Fauve Records kept up their early momentum.
Here are five of the best:
1 'Purity' Wong Echo
Title: Purity EP
Artist: Wong Echo
Label: Forever 24 Records
Release: Out now, you can buy it here
Slow-mo back room house flavours. The reverb-heavy synth melody dances over a smokey drum track, pads slowly open and close as a playful counterpoint teases in the distance. Harmonically rich and textured.
2 'Simplicity Is The Ultimate Sophistication' Matthieu Faubourg
Title: Simplicity Is The Ultimate Sophistication
Artist: Matthieu
Faubourg
Label:
Jazzy Couscous
Release: Out now, you can buy it here
Textured
deep house album on the boutique label from Tokyo. Our pick, 'I've
Never Been To Tokyo' grooves effortlessly as synth layers are weaved
in and out. The album also includes an excellent remix from Alabama
virtuoso, Byron The Aquarius.
3 Extinct Melodies From The Canto Club
Title: Extinct
Melodies From The Canto Club
Artist:
Various
Label:
Fauve
Records
Release: Out
now, you can buy it here
More
top-drawer edits from the Hong Kong's Fauve Records team. For this instalment, Midnight Runners join label boss RFX to re-purpose some
super-rare Cantonese disco gold.
4 'That Body' The Cook, The Thief
Title: That
Body
Artist: The
Cook, The Thief
Label: Loulou
records
Release: Out now, you can buy it here
Solid
main room house cut from Taipei-based South African, The Cook, The
Thief. Jacking drums, sinister bass and vocal chops give this track
an old school feel.
5 'Supernoize' Yellow Claw & Juyen Sebulba (feat. RayRay)
Title:
Supernoize
Artist: Yellow Claw & Juyen
Sebulba (feat. RayRay)
Label: Barong
Family
Release: February 21, you can buy it here
High octane collaboration between Yellow Claw and Taiwan's Ray Ray. This is the first release from the forthcoming Barong Family album, 'Hard In Bangkok'. This is bouncy, hardstyle EDM that takes no prisoners.
