Malaysia strengthens AI push with new Nvidia data centre in Johor

Malaysia has unveiled its first Nvidia-powered AI data centre, developed by YTL Power International in partnership with Nvidia.

The facility, located on a 1,640-acre site in Johor, is equipped with Nvidia’s latest liquid-cooled NVL72 Grace Blackwell GPUs and is supported by renewable energy from a 500MW solar plant.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the launch, where he met Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and YTL Power managing director Datuk Seri Yeoh Seok Hong. “I congratulate YTL and Nvidia on achieving this significant milestone and hope it will accelerate the AI drive for the benefit of all Malaysians,” he said.

Also present was Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who highlighted that the government has allocated RM5.9 billion (approximately US$1.40 billion) in Budget 2026 to strengthen Malaysia’s AI sector.

According to the announcement, the YTL AI Cloud will provide AI services for government and public applications, while also delivering high-performance computing for large-scale machine learning.

As reported by Yahoo! Finance, Nvidia and YTL previously signed a RM10 billion (US$2.36 billion) agreement to develop AI infrastructure in Malaysia, including a sovereign AI language model. This follows a US$4.3 billion investment plan disclosed in 2023.

Nvidia, founded in 1993, pioneered the modern graphics processing unit and today builds computing systems used in AI, data centres, gaming, and automotive technology.

The company has also expanded its AI initiatives in South Korea, reportedly engaging with Samsung, Hyundai, and SK Group on large-scale computing projects.
