JIN (禁)’s latest EP from Cosmo is an off-kilter, groove-heavy masterpiece

Taiwan-based label JIN (禁) returns with its ninth release, this time tapping Seoul’s rising star Cosmo for an EP that’s arguably one of the label’s most compelling to date.

'JIN09' sees Cosmo drifting into celestial territory, blending house and Balearic influences as well as darker tech, to craft a release that's equal parts dreamy and daring.

True to JIN (禁)’s DNA, the project has its twists and turns and isn’t content sticking to one mood, and rather pushes the artist’s boundaries, much like the label's previous releases—Gonno’s incredible recent EP being a prime example.

Side A is a lush, atmospheric listen, with floating, ethereal textures that radiates soothing energy. On the flip, things take a darker turn. Side B delves into heavier, techier rhythms, injecting a brooding, unsettling energy into the mix.

Cosmo’s ability to effortlessly glide between these contrasting sounds and styles is a testament to her versatility in this ever-changing yet comprehensive record.

It’s hard to pick a favourite as they all add something important to the project, but ‘Her’ has stuck with us. The strange off-kilter stylings are personified perfectly in the music video.

The video’s surreal narrative is as mystifying as the music itself, leaving you hooked without fully understanding why.

To top it all off, JIN (禁) threw a release party in Seoul with a stacked line-up including label boss Yoshi Nori and the always-vibrant Mogwaa. A night to match the EP’s expansive sonic palette, and yet another way to mark another milestone for the forward-thinking imprint.
