‘Intended Consequence’ embodies the resilience of Iranian women in 10 tracks

Featuring 10 eclectic tracks from some of Iran’s most talented female musicians and sound artists, ‘Intended Consequence’ aims to paint the picture of power, resistance and persistence in moments of chaos and calm.

The release comes via Apranik Records, a label co-founded by AIDA and Nesa Azadikhah; two female producers deeply rooted in their Iranian background, with AIDA based between San Francisco and Vancouver and Nesa in Tehran.

The release aspires to tell the story of Iranian women’s perpetual fight for liberty in their own country. It follows Apranik Records’ previous compilation ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ — a sonic response towards women-led uprisings in Iran, triggered by the killing of Mahsa Zhina Amini.

Mahsa died after being transferred to a hospital in Tehran on September 16, 2022 — beforehand, she had spent three days in custody of Iran’s morality police for not wearing a hijab outside the house.

The compilation’s title is not without meaning; it refers to the results that emerge from the decisions we make, even when faced with potential risks. "Intended Consequence" pays tribute to the ongoing struggle of Iranian women for freedom in their daily lives, with music that embodies the essence of their choices and a continuous pursuit of liberation.

In addition to its powerful spirit of protest and resilience, the VA also highlights a wide-ranging spectrum of sound in the electronic realm with a fresh line-up of Iranian women artists.

Leaving almost no genre left behind, we’re presented with a plethora of sonic creativity that touches on glitchy club rhythms, clattering jungle, polyrhythmic electro and even beatless experimentation.

The two label heads also bestow upon us their fresh cuts; AIDA’s ‘Ode to Expectations’ teems with shimmering 4/4 loops and Nesa’s ‘Perpetual’ is an alluringly warm breakbeat anthem. Peek the artists and titles below.
