Hong Kong talent Sophy Wong winds up her year with new Mandarin EP 'Harsh'
Experimental electronic EP is both dark and sentimental
Hong Kong singer-songwriter Sophy Wong has given her fans a new year’s present by dropping her first Mandarin EP 'Harsh' last week. Returning with an electronic vibe, Sophy taps into her dark side on this one. Taiwanese electronic producer Huang Shao Yong came aboard to mix two of the songs, adding to the new experimental twist in her style.
'Harsh' is Sophy's third EP since she released her second EP 'Quarter' two years ago. As mentioned in the EP’s description, Sophy wants to embrace her vulnerable self in a harsh world. The 7-track EP is constructed with stark, jazzy chords on top of electronic stabs and rhythms – with Sophy’s haunting Mandarin melodies floating on top. Huang Shao Yong’s two tracks from the EP, 'Eye' and 'Screen' are standouts, and his dreamy, soulful yet electronic style is a departure from Sophy's previous r'n'b stylings. You can hear these two tracks below:
Also known as Wong Ka Yee, Sophy has been making her name in the Hong Kong indie music scene, with her sonorous voice and outspoken persona. She once carried out an experiment by openly buying 10 thousand likes for her song 'Brave New World' to raise awareness about engagement manipulation on social media. Sophy will have her first mini-tour along with Taipei DJ and producer Dizparity this Friday at Taipei‘s Witch House to promote ‘Harsh’. Click here to learn more.
