GotSome share 6 classic tunes that define Bristol's influential music scene

Bristol has long been a city synonymous with spawning legends, especially in music and art (think Banksy). Musically, Bristol has been long lauded for its colorful representation of music cultures and for cultivating influential artists like Smith & Mighty, Roni Size Reprazent and of course Tricky, Massive Attack and Portishead have come to define what has been typified as the Bristol Sound.

But the city and its surrounding areas have also been breeding scores of underground music artists. With major influences being drum 'n' bass and trip-hop, the underground music scene has always been healthy and diverse, and its impact can still be heard in some of today's underground artists from Bristol like Eats Everything, Julio Bashmore and Redlight.

Ahead of their tour of Asia later this month, Bristolians Adam Gorsky and Alex Holmes, who together make up DJ and producer duo GotSome, have put together a list of what they think are Bristol’s defining tracks so that Asia can familiarize itself with the iconic city and its renowned music scene.

Also have a listen to the exclusive mix that the duo have prepared for us. Full tour schedule is also below.

1. Smith and Mighty

Walk On By (1987)

"Classic tune from some Bristol legends with a great blend of synths, beats and soul vocal. Made in a Basement not far from us! This tune laid the path for a lot of the Bristol musical talent that followed."

2. Krust

Warhead (Steppa Mix) (1997)

"One of our favourite bass lines. So simple but devastatingly effective on the dance floor. We remember dancing to this in a club in Bristol called Lakota. It came out on Jumpin’ Jack Frost and Bryan G’s label V-Recordings and they were big supporters of the early Jungle scene in the city."

3. Joker

Tron (2010)

"Joker took elements of Dubstep, Jungle, G-Funk and Grime and combined them to form his own unique sound. His synth work was a lot more melodic and soulful than a lot of the Dubstep that was around at the time."

4. Redlight

Source 16 (2011)

"We can’t make a list of big Bristol tunes without including this. It was the track that really cemented Redlight’s sound once he’d moved away from his DJ Clipz name, although it still had familiar elements. It’s still features in our sets and never fails to smash the dance floor. "

5. Julio Bashmore

Battle for Middle You (2011)

"Bashmore’s first big breakout tune that brought a big drum and bass-style sub line to a more house inspired track. The choice of sounds and the way the track progresses still sounds fresh now. He followed it up with the equally unique Au Seve, which really put his name on the map. "

6. Eats Everything

Entrance Song (2011)

"Another breakthrough track. Entrance Song features some excellent chopping and processing of an RnB sample, with an extremely satisfying build-up and bass heavy release on the drop. It also put Eats on the radar of Claude Von Stroke and Pete Tong, who he’s worked with since."

7. Sure Thing

Holding You Tight (2014)

"DJ Die and Cristophe’s boogie project is full of vintage soul, class and effortless funk, but still with a hint of modern edge. We liked it so much we did a big bass heavy remix!"
