​Desa Potato Head unveils an online archive of 4,000+ pieces of rave ephemera

Somewhere within the walls of Studio Eksotika lies a gallery that houses one of the most extraordinary collections of dance music memorabilia in the world. But just days before Desa Potato Head was to open the doors to its newly acquired Wild Life Archive, disaster struck — the fury of COVID-19 led to the closure of Desa Potato Head (along with almost everything else in Bali...and the world). Always ones to innovate, a full-on digital strategy ensued featuring sustainable lifestyle hacks, in-house recipes (like their Flores Margarita) and Daily Morning Rituals. Best of all, they also brought the exhibition online.

Steve Terry’s Wild Life Archive is a world-renowned collection of ephemera, books, magazines and other related artefacts documenting dance music culture from its early origins all the way through to today’s global scene. 25 years in the making, the collection is made up of more than 4,000 items that date back to the early 1970s from as far as Paradise Garage and Hacienda to Berghain and Dekmantel. The archive spans New York disco, Chicago house, Detroit techno, Belgium new beat, Ibiza Balearic and UK acid house, with pieces from high profile cultural icons like Kim Jones, Slam Jam, Keith Kering, DJ Harvey and more. Before arriving at Potato Head, the unique archive has been presented globally at places like Institute of Contemporary Art in London, Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Los Angeles, Tate in Liverpool and Vitra Design Museum in Germany.

Items from the exhibition will be published across Potato Head’s Instagram, Facebook and website on a weekly basis. It can also be viewed online as it is revealed here. The physical exhibition will launch on-site at Desa Potato Head in Bali in early 2021.

Desa Potato Head is the reincarnation of Potato Head Beach Club as we know it, having transformed into a creative village by the ocean just a few months ago.
