Chinese designer Zhijun Wang releases a DIY mask template 'Maskology'
Wang is famous for forward-thinking masks made from sneakers and IKEA bags
Who would have thought that masks were going to be 2020s most in-demand item? As such, mask prices are soaring with people lining up for hours to stock up on just a few. DIY masks are an easy solution, and several fashion brands and designers have stepped up to the occasion. Actually, designer masks in China are nothing new, and notable Chinese fashion designer Zhijun Wang has been spearheading that trend. Now, he's taken designing his own masks one step further and has released a template for people to make their own masks at home.
Wang started to make his own masks in 2016 to protect Chinese citizens from the country's heavy smog...fashionably. Since then, his innovative and artistic masks have attracted over 46,000 fans on Instagram. He can make masks out of anything, namely sneakers but he's even released a few made from things like IKEA shopping bags.
In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak in China, Wang recently decided to take his work one step further to "do something helpful for our living community". And so he started a DIY mask template, a concept that came to him in a dream that he was able to actualise amid the pandemic.
Wang and his wife Yutong Duan swiftly shared the 'Maskology' template on socials. "We know not everyone can get proper protection at quarantine time right now," Wang mentioned in a recent Instagram post. "So we want to share the idea of our home-made mask — 'EVERYONE CAN MAKE A MASK'."
Wang, along with his wife, demonstrated making the mask in a tutorial:
Speaking of DIY masks, Zhijun Wang is an expert in the area as he has been crafting face masks for a long time in creative ways. The most iconic one must be the sneaker mask that Wang transformed from the signature Nike Air Max sneakers:
He also uses his art to raise awareness on public issues, such as when he supported the pandemic in Italy by creating a mask with a shopping bag from a supermarket in Italy called ‘Esselunga’:
