Cakeshop Seoul announces first-ever South Korea tour

Starting this June, Cakeshop, one of Seoul's longest-running underground clubs, is embarking on its first-ever South Korea tour, bringing its music and ethos to five cities across the country.

Launched in 2012 by local expats in search of a scene that did not yet exist in the city, Cakeshop is a basement venue that has built its reputation on a raw, uncompromising approach to club culture.

Over the years, it has carved out space for genres like UK bass, grime, future garage, hyperpop, and experimental hip hop; sounds that were largely uncommon in South Korea when the club first opened.

International acts like Lady Shaka, AceMo, Armana Khan, Kush Jones, Moor Mother, DJ Fucci and regulars like R&B (rom & BAAWLA), Coziest, Kisewa and Net Gala are among the many artists who have passed through Cakeshop’s booth over the years.

The tour, set to begin on June 13 in Gwangju before concluding in Jeju on July 11, promises to bring the energy and spirit that have defined the club for nearly 14 years.

Speaking on the significance of the tour, Mixmag Asia spoke with DJ GGAX2, co-creator of Simhae Deepocean Lab Gwangju, who explains that it “has meaning in showing people that the Korean underground scene does not only exist in Seoul, but also in regional cities.”

He adds: “In fact, Simhae Deepocean marks its 10th year this year, and Simhae Lab Club its sixth year. However, because we are located outside Seoul, and because there is often little connection with Seoul, where most people are concentrated, I think there are cases where places like ours eventually disappear from people’s awareness.”

“That is why I think opportunities like this are important. It is a way for us to show that we have been consistently active, that we are still here, and that we are always waiting and existing,” DJ GGAX2 concludes.

With five dates between June and July, Cakeshop will head to Gwangju, Busan, Daegu, Paju and Jeju.

Although the line-up is yet to be announced, the tour is expected to feature some of the club’s closest DJs.
