Berlin’s Tresor announces 12-week mentorship program on nightclub management

Berlin club and record label Tresor is launching a 12-week mentorship program teaching the ropes of nightclub management.

Six young applicants will be selected to join the scheme, titled ‘How To Run a Club’, via the Tresor Foundation and the team behind the Academy of Subcultural Understanding.

The three-month program begins in spring 2024, hosted at Kraftwerk Berlin. Applicants are encouraged to apply now until the deadline on Monday, November 20.

“The Academy of Subcultural Understanding is looking for students with a vision of running a venue in their hometowns,” Tresor announced on Instagram last month.

The scheme promises knowledge exchange, training, and resources to support the applicant’s ideas and goals, offering “intensive” training in club management to young people working in the sector.

‘How To Run a Club’ also encourages the facilitation of sustainable cultural spaces, looking into urbanism, community-building and subcultures alongside researchers and local experts.

“Learning from each student and the unique circumstances and challenges in their towns, cities and regions, we develop strategies for promoting club cultures that are locally situated,” reads the Academy of Subcultural Understanding website.

“Meanwhile, through time in the classroom and the club in Berlin, participants will learn all essential elements of running a successful club.”

The course will provide seminars, speakers, and meetings with industry experts, as well as hands-on training and practical experience with clubs including Tresor, Kraftwerk, OHM and Berlin Atonal.

“Paid employment working various jobs in the clubs will train our graduates as Club Makers, ready to open a venue in their own hometowns,” they explained.

In the UK, 35 independent nightlife businesses are said to be vanishing each week with a 5% decline in clubs in the space of just 12 months.
