​Berghain’s notorious bouncer Sven Marquardt to speak and showcase photography in Manila

Hosted by German cultural institution Goethe-Institut Philippine together with XX XX (20:20) nightclub and Third Culture Music, it will focus on showcasing Berlin’s club culture by featuring photography and electronic music from the German capital.

Besides manning the door at one of the world’s best but hardest to get into clubs, Marquardt is a seasoned photographer and has had his works shown at exhibitions all over the world as well as releasing a memoir detailing his life in the German music scene last year. Sven’s photos depicting Berlin’s raucous club culture, which has made a powerful impact on Berlin’s own culture, will feature at the Manila exhibition along with the works Martin Eberle.

Similar to a club environment, the exhibit intends to engage both sight and sound. Accompanying the photography will be complementary state-of-the-art sound installations by Berlin-bred artists like Marcel Dettmann, Modeselektor, Tale Of Us, Rødhåd and Answer Code Request. Guests will hear music from seven different artists by moving from one area of the exhibit to the other.

Marquardt, who has been dubbed ‘Lord of the Night’ by German media, will be speaking on opening night both about his photography and his decades long stint as Berghain’s merciless bouncer. This is your chance to rub shoulders with the legend and hopefully have him remember your face for the next time you’re queued for hours at Berghain.

The exhibition is free and runs from August 26th to September 25th at the Pineapple Lab in Manila. Opening night kicks off at 6pm with Marquardt speaking at 7pm and an afterparty with Berghain's newest resident Somewhen will follow at XX XX. Fingers crossed that they can rope Marquardt into doorman duties for the night.
