Baypoet fuels the future disco fire with new release on Manchester's Sprechen Music
The Indonesian artist fuses Italo house & disco on the club-focused 'Translink' EP
Jakarta-based artist Baypoet shows up on revered UK label Sprechen with his 'Translink' EP, expertly setting the club mood with a pair of simmering nu-disco heaters.
By day, Baypoet spends his time working as a tattoo artist and graphic designer, but by night he's more likely to be found rocking the turntables at one of Jakarta's esoteric clubs. The Indonesian producer and DJ has been active on the local scene for the past seven or so years – having been introduced to UK dance music by his elder sister – but his production journey is only just beginning. 'Translink' is only his second release, so for it to find a home on one of the UK's most respected disco imprints is quite an achievement. Sprechen is run by established Manchester-based artist, Chris Massey, a player who's been making waves on the dance underground for decades. Aside from running the label, he also serves as A&R for seminal disco/house label, Paper Recordings, and previously curated the artist roster for Croatia's much-loved Electric Elephant festival. The Sprechen quality threshold is set extraordinarily high, releasing dance-focused tracks that, while generally rooted in disco, refuse to sit too neatly into rigidly defined genres. With that in mind, it's pleasing to see an up and coming artist from the region grace the illustrious roster.
Translink opens with the EP's title track, where throbbing
bass and crisp machine drums drive rush-inducing chords for a
propulsive dancefloor celebration. Also included is 'Outer', a few
degrees more introspective but no less effective, as dramatic chords
soar over brooding bass and stirring club rhythms before atmospheric
horns cascade over pulsing arpeggios. This is impressive work from
Baypoet. Discreetly retro-leaning but geared to future-facing floors,
the music sounds entirely current and is sure to win admires among
fans of Lauer, Gerd Jansen and the like.
Baypoet 'Translink' is out now via Juno Download and will be available across all digital platforms in late March. You can buy it here
