Batavia Collective pair jazz freedom with dancefloor weight in new live session video
Spiritual Jazz, Sinful Bass follows the Jakarta trio across four tracks of free-flowing jazz & heavy low-end pressure
Batavia Collective has announced a new live session video, and its title, Spiritual Jazz, Sinful Bass, sums up exactly how they play.
The session sees the Jakarta-based group blend improvised jazz with club-minded low end, capturing the interplay that defines their sound. It’s described as "an audiovisual live session exploring the intersection of jazz improvisation and underground club culture".
We’ve previously covered the Indonesian musicians moving through future jazz, classic soul, deep house and hip hop, with the warmth of an electric piano, a heavy, low-tuned snare and the growl of a synth bass.
Three of the four tracks played live come from the group’s ‘CODED EP’, ranging from ambient textures and fractured beats to club minimalism and ritualistic techno leanings.
In the room you’re able to see Doni Joesran’s keys, Elfa Zulham’s drums and Kenny Gabriel’s synth bass react to one another, keeping a jazz foundation under rhythms built for the club.
Their intricate setup keeps the sound hard to pin down. The visuals match the music, with neon-lit lighting structures spread through an open, warehouse-like space that gives the raw room some colour.
