Audio Asia: Mountain serves slick d'n'b flex on 'Passenger'
The Japanese artist teams with In:Most on the hard-hitting new release
Title: Passenger
Artist: Mountain ft In:Most
Label: Soulvent Records
Release Date: Out now
Fast-rising Japanese producer Mountain lands on UK's Soulvent Records with a 14-track eponymous album.
Shigeta 'Mountain' Kamiyama has been causing a stir in the drum 'n' bass community, with his high-energy sound finding a platform on revered labels including Hospital, RAM, Liquicity, and Viper among others. His return to London-based Soulvent is an artistic triumph, with the far-reaching album vividly demonstrating the depth of his sonic artistry. The Osaka native expertly surfs the nuanced shades of the d'n'b sound palette, traversing realms of funk, jazz, liquid, pop, as well as the darker outer reaches of the spectrum. 'Mountain' sees Kamiyama collaborate with a carefully assembled selection of his peers – including Makoto, Ruth Royall, and Soulvent label mate, In:Most – and it's his 'Passenger' collaboration with the latter that has been raising the temperature here at Mixmag Asia HQ.
Working together for the first time, the pair appear to have quickly generated some serious studio simpatico, serving a hard-hitting roller that fizzes with a slick production gloss. Leviathan snares power the groove, as delicate synth arpeggios, shimmering chords and heavyweight bass combine to fist-pumping effect. Energetic, harmonically rich, and endowed with a crossover-primed shimmer, this is fine work from both players.
