Ardhira Putra brings 1980s nostalgia to Singapore with VAKANSI showcase

Ardhira Putra will be holding a showcase for his latest merchandise series, VAKANSI, at Singapore’s Aaah House on May 25-June 2.

Known for his vibrant illustrations and animations, the Jakarta-based illustrator’s VAKANSI series draws inspiration from the carefree spirit of the 1980s, when city dwellers ventured to Southeast Asian beaches in minivans, seeking adventure and solace.

VAKANSI ("vacation" in Indonesian), serves as the backdrop for a nostalgic road trip narrative. The series portrays a couple uncovering hidden beach gems, savouring local cuisines, and experiencing untouched natural wonders.

Each piece reflects the simplicity and joy of family trips, inspired by vintage photographs of Ardhira’s parents’ camping adventures across Java islands.

“In a world that never ceases to move, taking a moment to pause and breathe becomes a necessity,” explains the artist, emphasising the importance of cherishing simple pleasures amidst the fast-paced modern life.

Ardhira's artistic career flourished during his three-and-a-half years in Singapore until 2021, when he found a vibrant community of creatives.

This period also marked the beginning of his collaboration with Dust and Bones, a fellow illustrator known for his intricate automotive designs. Bound by their shared love for art and automobiles, they brought to life the iconic cars featured in the VAKANSI series.

“The event is a mini exhibition to launch my new merchandise, but it’s also more like a little reunion with my friends in Singapore,” he adds.
