Around Asia, for those in the know, December is (mostly) all about prepping for Wonderfruit.

So, ahead of this year’s edition, we thought there was no better time to revisit one of last year’s standout highlights, courtesy of the one and only DJ Masda.

In 2024, like us, many Wonderers were glued to the Catch 428 stage for the full three hours of his set, which captured everything that’s bold, nuanced, and compelling about Asia’s electronic music scene.

When recapping our favourite moments from the festival, we wrote: “How else to describe DJ Masda’s set besides a masterclass?”

Listening back today, that statement rings truer than ever. Even without the magic of the Wonderfruit setting, the depth, control and storytelling in this set remain unmistakable and prove why Masda is at the top of his game.

So whether you're travelling from Bangkok to The Fields or simply looking to get into the festival mindset, we highly recommend immersing yourself in this gem of a set.

Listen to the Cabaret Recordings co-founder’s Wonderfruit 2024 set below.

What did you have in mind when you were crafting this set for Wonderfruit? What does your process of set-building look like?

I honestly don’t remember exactly, but I don’t think there was anything particularly special behind it. I just played music that I like, keeping in mind the situation, the time slot and the setting. That's what DJs do, right? We play art that was created by other people... I try not to be too mystical about it.

Can you share with us a memorable experience you had while in The Fields last year (apart from performing on stage)?

Spending time with my friend and my girlfriend. Enjoying good food, and just hanging out. Those simple moments were really nice.

Why did you want Mixmag Asia to release this set? What is it about this set that stands out to you?

There wasn’t a big reason. The idea just came to me, and it felt right.

Sadly, many clubs around Asia are closing at the moment. What are some spots you still frequent often and hope never see the same fate?

I'm not in Asia as much as I'm based in Berlin, so there aren't clubs I go to often. Clubs open and close all the time, and it’s part of the cycle. I just hope each scene keeps finding its way.

What does 2026 look like for Cabaret Recordings?

There are some great releases lined up, from artists who are already friends of the label and some exciting new collaborations as well. All will be revealed when the time is right.
