Mengzy Selects - 052 / October
Mixmag Asia's bass purveyor Mengzy shares her musical discoveries from around the region
Welcome to ‘Mengzy Selects’, a monthly video column which features recently released tracks by producers and labels in Asia and across the Asian diaspora. Your host is Mengzy: a Hong Kong-based DJ and producer, PhD in musicology, music journalist and co-founder of Feed the Dragon.
Groovedeep ‘Flashback’
Groovedeep, the dynamic techno trio made up of Ciel, James Bangura and Jackson Ryland (JR2k), released ‘Speed Queen’ via Fixed Rhythms on October 15. As their moniker promises, the Toronto and DC-based producers infused the 4/4-driven EP with a generous serving of groove which is on full display in ‘Flashback’.

DMX Krew ‘Shake’ (Luca Lozano Remix)
We made a mental note six months ago when Klasse Wrecks launched its “speedy” Cabbage Trax sublabel. Dedicated to faster BPMs, the imprint dropped its second release earlier this month with DMX Krew joining co-founder Luca Lozano on four great electro cuts.

Djazz ‘Nonstop Music for her Majesty’
It’s an epic orchestral arrangement on MIDI and not a sample that kicks off Djazz’s ‘Nonstop Music for her Majesty’, a funky acid house adventure that features on Vol. III of his ‘Tantric Acid’ series. I don’t have the space to play the intro here but trust me it’s worth checking out… and the rest of the track speaks for itself!

Ken Ishii ‘Blue Life’
Something a bit unexpected this month from Tokyo techno stalwart Ken Ishii of R&S fame: a remastered version of ‘Blue Life’ courtesy of his Bandcamp. The gorgeous ambient breaks track was featured as the ending theme of the underwater adventure game Jupiter & Mars, which was ported to Nintendo Switch just last month.
