Mengzy Selects – 050 / August

Welcome to ‘Mengzy Selects’, a monthly video column which features recently released tracks by producers and labels in Asia and across the Asian diaspora. Your host is Mengzy: a Hong Kong-based DJ and producer, PhD in musicology, music journalist and co-founder of Feed the Dragon.

Rajah Betta released a great remix recently on the latest album from Brooklyn-based Hindi shoegaze outfit, Minaxi. His dub take on ‘Jaan’ features psychedelic acid and percussive momentum and the entire project is worth checking out, by the way – I mean, look at this artwork, designed by Minaxi bandmember, Shrenik Ganatra.

Just over a year old, Indonesian label RAMPAK G is now on its third compilation, ‘Symbiotic III’, for which five producers were given the same sample pack to make their tracks with. NOISYNOISE plays with xylophonic sounds and gqom rhythms for his contribution.

Another young label with a strong release this month is Darama and yourboykiran’s Bubblin imprint. ‘Birdcage’ is one of four tracks on ‘nice day for it’, an EP partly inspired by Berlin-based Neana’s early exposures to UK Funky artists like Roska on Rinse FM.

Resentment Nation founder PRIMIT dropped an incendiary electro single on August 7th with the spicy title ‘No More Fucking EDITS’. The South Korean producer’s gritty aesthetic and peak-time energy is on full display with this one, which is available on Bandcamp as a free download, so DJs take note!
