Welcome to ‘Mengzy Selects’, a monthly video column which features recently released tracks by producers and labels in Asia and across the Asian diaspora. Your host is Mengzy: a Hong Kong-based DJ and producer, PhD in musicology, music journalist and co-founder of Feed the Dragon.

Sampling The Whispers, DJazz’s ‘The Beat Goes On and On’ appears on his final EP for the year: ‘Tantric Acid Vol. II’. Layered breaks, acid, and a touch of flanger meld together hypnotically at 115 BPM.

Jordan Harding and Kulv Ghatora’s joint production project Joku recently released a 2-track EP on Brighton-based label Southpoint. Inspired by “90s nostalgic video games, sci-fi soundtracks, and the current UK club scene”, ‘Hyperdrive’ recalls early-2000s breakbeat.

64controll released ‘Dic’ EP on TREKKIE TRAX on December 12. Made up of zene and U-koh, 64controll is another production duo but from Japan. Returning to the label following a recent collab with Carpainter is DJ ADHD who remixes the title track from footwork into hard techno.

For our top pick of the year, we had to go with the Peaking Lights remix of ‘Disco Wich Aa’. This remix comes from a great project responsible for rereleasing a forgotten gem of South Asian dance music history but it also speaks for itself as an incredible dancefloor track that we’ve heard played in multiple clubs and festival stages since covering its release in September.
